New Year’s Eve Fondue Party

When I was 18 years old I flew out to visit some friends out of state and stayed with my aunt and uncle. It was such a fun trip. I got to spend New Years Eve with them and visit with my cousins. My aunt made a cheese fondue for dinner one night and I loved it so much that I made it for my parentswhen I got home. It is such a fun dinner and now that I have kids of my own we still enjoy dusting off the fondue pot and making our favorite dips on New Year’s Eve!

I’ve collaborated with my friends at Evite to share photos from one of their recent parties, and a few of my favorite fondue recipes that our family has used for years! Fondue is a great way to give kids a bit of independence in creating their own appetizers.

Easy recipes for cheese fondue, chocolate fondue, and broth fondue

Cheese Fondue

Fondue is such a great kid-friendly dinner and activity. My kids love being able to be independent and especially like having a little buffet of items to choose from instead of me handing them a plate with food on it.

This cheese fondue recipe skips the white wine and calls for mild Monterey or Colby jack to appeal to kid palates (just save it for kids 4 and above, as melted cheese, fondue pots, and pointy skewers can be safety hazards for younger children). It can be served warm in a bowl and eaten immediately or last all party long in a fondue pot set on low.

Here is a great fondue pot for families.

Easy Cheese Fondue Recipe

Cheese Fondue Ingredients

  • 1 8-ounce block Monterey jack cheese (can also use cheddar cheese, Swiss cheese, or a combination!)
  • 1 12-ounce can evaporated milk (plus an additional can, if necessary)
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • pinch of ground pepper
  • pinch of nutmeg (optional)

Directions

Shred cheese.

Mix all ingredients in a medium saucepan and heat over medium heat, stirring occasionally for the first three minutes.

Stir constantly for two more minutes, or until melted, bubbly, thickened, and smooth.

If the fondue is too thick, add evaporated milk a quarter cup at a time until it’s the consistency you want. Pour into fondue pot or bowl and serve with dippables.

NOTE: We like using half sharp cheddar and half Colby Jack. You can use all cheddar or all Colby Jack, whatever you prefer. It’s always delicious.

Tip: buy a block of cheese and shred it yourself. It melts better than way vs. buying shredded cheese.

Favorite Foods To Dip in cheese fondue

  • cubed French bread
  • blanched broccoli
  • hot dogs
  • pretzels
  • carrots
  • mushrooms
  • cubed ham
  • cooked baby potatoes

Chocolate fondue is fun to serve in a chocolate fountain (which is considerably less expensive than a fondue pot).

Easy Chocolate Fondue Recipe

Two ingredients are all you need for this show-stopping dessert that kids and adults alike will love(just save it for kids 4 and above, as fondue pots, fondue forks, and pointy skewers can be safety hazards for younger children). The chocolate fonduecan be served warm in a bowl and eaten immediately or last all party long in a fondue pot or fondue fountain set on low.

Chocolate Fondue Ingredients

  • 1 bag(11.5 ounces) of milk or semisweet chocolate chips
  • 3/4cup heavy whipping cream

Combine chocolate chips and cream over med/low heat and heat until melted and smooth. Transfer to a fondue pot to keep warm. If using a chocolate fountain, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for what type of chocolate to use.

Favorite Foods To Dip In Chocolate Fondue

  • marshmallows
  • pound cake
  • strawberries
  • blueberries
  • banana slices
  • pretzels
  • donut holes
  • gummy bears
  • apple slices

Easy Broth Fondue Recipe

We do cheese, chocolate, and broth fondue with our kids, but a broth fondue requires quite a bit of supervision because of the hot broth and raw meats. Not one to let kids do on their own, but delicious to do as a family. We usually simmer chicken broth, garlic, and a couple of splashes of soy sauce. Simple and perfect for cooking shrimp, chicken, and thin slices of steak.

Favorite Foods To Cook In a Broth Fondue

  • chicken
  • steak
  • shrimp

Fill the fondue pot halfway with chicken broth, a teaspoon of minced garlic, and a couple of splashes of soy sauce, and heat until it simmers. Cook small pieces of meat on skewers until the meat is done (no pink) and the shrimp turns pink.
